A Case Study of BC’s Curricula Illustrating How Attention to Multiculturalism Has Changed Over Time

In this presentation, I will discuss the impact of the establishment of Multiculturalism in Canada in 1971 on schools through a case study discussion of BC’s mandated curricula.  I will begin by discussing BC’s curricula prior to 1971 to set the context. I will then discuss how the Social Studies curriculum revisions of 1985, 1997, 2005 and most recently 2015, have discussed and integrated content on/for/about Multiculturalism.  I will conclude my presentation with a general discussion of how Federal policies can influence education, a provincial responsibility.

Catherine Broom is an Associate Professor of Education at UBC Okanagan. Her work explores the historical and contemporary meaning of, and possible methods for teaching Social Studies with an emphasis on citizenship, ecology and and holistic methods.
