“Mirrors, windows and doors”: Exploring the shifting roles of multicultural literature

This session will explore the ways in which multicultural literature has changed English Language Arts teaching. In doing so, both the possible benefits and potential challenges of multicultural literature will be debated, using the ‘mirrors, windows and sliding glass doors’ metaphor as a framework for examination. Ways that literature for children and youth can play a role in shaping a more inclusive future for Canadians will be considered.

Lynne Wiltse is a Professor in the Department of Elementary Education at the University of Alberta where she teaches courses in language and literacy and children’s literature.
